Calling all sweet tooths! The Hummingbird Bakery is legendary here in London and we've taken many a friend and guest to the Portobello Road or S. Kensington shop to savour the local goodness. One day over lunch, I was perusing the titles in my favorite S. Ken bookshop when I came across the Hummingbird's cookbook. My friend, Anne, completely spoiled me with the chocolate ones from the cookbook for my birthday. Whenever I walk by the shop, my sense of sweets smell is heightened by like 1,000. So, I thought, 'Self, why haven't you bought this cookbook before?' And off to the tills I went. (British for cash register). Best decision of the day, to say the least! I made the banana ginger ones with chocolate icing for my friend, Katie. It was love at first bite, and Brian and I vowed that looking up all metric measurements to convert them to American measuring cups, spoons--whatever, you name it (it is quite a job to do weight vs measurements), was totally, completely and utterly worth it.
PS--my neighbor, Rita, told me that the English use the word 'fairycake' in place of 'cupcake' oftentimes. Love the new word for these delicious desserts.
